About には及ばない①

には及(およ)ばない is a polite expression in Japanese used in order to indicate that there is 'no need to (A)', or that '(A) is unnecessary. It is a combination of the case-marking marking particle に, the adverbial particle は, and the negated form of the う-Verb 及(およ)ぶ 'to reach', 及(およ)ばない. The literal translation is 'it does not extend to (A)'.
This phrase will appear after nouns, or verbs in their dictionary form.
  • こちらから前(まえ)いただいたアドレスに送(おく)るので、こんな遠(とお)くまで取(と)りに来(き)ていただくには及(およ)びません。
    I am going to send it to the email address you gave us last time, so there is no need to come this far to pick it up.
  • 私(わたし)たちの方(ほう)からそちらに書類(しょるい)を持(も)っていくので、こちらまでお越(こ)しいただくには及(およ)びません。
    We will bring the documents to you, so there is no need to come here.
  • 心配(しんぱい)には及(およ)びません。これぐらいの怪我(けが)なら全然(ぜんぜん)我慢(がまん)できます。
    There is no need to worry. This level of injury is totally bearable.
  • ここに書(か)いてあることは皆(みな)さんもう知(し)っていられると思(おも)うんで、説明(せつめい)には及(およ)びませんね。
    I think everyone already knows the contents of this, so there is no need for me to explain.
As this grammar pattern is used in polite speech, the word that it is attached to is often preceded by either お or ご, depending on what type of verb it is.
Caution
When not used as a polite expression, には及(およ)ばない may simply show the extent of something. This is usually when a comparison is being made between two things. This use will be translated as '(A) does not reach the extent of (B)', or '(A) cannot be compared to (B)'.
  • あの有名(ゆうめい)ラーメン店(てん)には及(およ)ばないけど、ここのラーメンも結構(けっこう)美味(おい)しいと思(おも)う。
    I think the ramen here is also quite good, though not as good as that famous ramen restaurant.
  • お宅(たく)の息子(むすこ)さんには及(およ)ばないかもだけど、私(わたし)の息子(むすこ)も結構(けっこう)上達(じょうたつ)してきたと思(おも)う。
    Maybe not as good as your son, but I think my son has also improved a lot.

  • 普通(ふつう)の人(ひと)「ありがとうございました。」
    偉(えら)い人(ひと)「いや、礼(れい)には及(およ)ばない。」

    Ordinary person: 'Thank you very much.'
    Person in high position: 'No need to thank me.'

  • 小説(しょうせつ)：バトラー「気(き)に入(い)ったなら、何(なに)か食(た)べるものでもお支度(したく)致(いた)しましょうか。」
    ゲスト「いいえ、それには及(およ)びません。」

    A novel, butler: 'If you would like I can make something to eat.'
    Guest: 'No, there is no need for that.'

  • 社員(しゃいん)「部長(ぶちょう)、車(くるま)で本社(ほんしゃ)までお送(おく)りします。空港(くうこう)でお待(ま)ち下(くだ)さい。」
    部長(ぶちょう)「わざわざ車(くるま)で迎(むか)えに来(く)るには及(およ)びません。近(ちか)いので私(わたし)がそこへ歩(ある)いていきます。」

    Company employee: 'Director, I will drive you to the headquarters. Please, wait at the airport.'
    Head of the department: 'No need to pick me up by car. It is close, so I will walk there myself.'

  • はいだ「れつこさんの顔色(かおいろ)が悪(わる)いね。」
    れつこ「ご心配(しんぱい)には及(およ)びません。ただちょっと活気(かっき)のないです。」

    Haida: 'Retsuko, you are pale.'
    Retsuko: 'No need to worry. I am just a bit tired.'

    ご心配するには及びません is also okay here.
