Review Settings
Summary: Comprehensive overview of the settings found in Settings > Reviews

What are Review Types?
At Bunpro, we understand that users learn in many different ways so we try to offer various methods for you to do your reviews. We're happy to offer different ways to both see the questions and also how to answer these questions. The selections for these can be found by going to Settings > Reviews, also here.
While the page itself has descriptions already for these differences, we'll quickly summarize them here too. Let's start with the Question Types:
Fill In
You are given a complete sentence that has either the grammar point or vocab word missing from it. The system will give you the relevant item to answer with in English and you'll be tasked with finishing the sentence to make it whole.
Reading
You are given the entire sentence along with the answer already included for either grammar or vocab reviews. This style can only be used in conjunction with the answer type Reveal & Grade, explained below.
Translate
Exclusive to vocab reviews, you are simply given a word in Japanese and asked to translate it. If Answer Type is set to Manual, you must write the answer to get it graded. If set to Reveal & Grade, you can answer in your head and not have to manually input the answer to get graded.
Now, let's shift gears to the Answer Types:
Manual
Regardless of whatever Question Type you have chosen, when using Manual you must physically write in the answer every single time to proceed.
Reveal & Grade
Opposite to Manual, regardless of Question Type you will never need to physically write in an answer to proceed. All you'll need to do is Answer it in your head and then you'll be able to judge yourself whether or not you got it correct.
For all Question + Answer Types, you must hit the Update button in order to save any of your changes for the next review session. Please note that the settings inside each Deck will override whatever you have saved in your general settings. For example, in one particular deck you may want to do Manual input for better retention but for others you are fine with Reveal & Grade. Rather than force one setting on you, we've give you the options to tweak things as you see fit.
What are Split Reviews?
For those of you who are currently learning both grammar and vocab with Bunpro, this setting will be of particular use to you. If you've ever wanted to review grammar and vocab separately for whatever reason, we allow you to do just this! Simply toggle the button to 'Yes' and you'll be ready to go.
To start your first Split Review session, simply head back to your Dashboard. Your Review button will have changed slightly, and should look something like this:
Click the area where the blue circle indicates and you'll have a drop-down menu ready for you to click whichever review type you are in the mood for.
What are Ghost Reviews?
Ghost Reviews are reviews that you have gotten incorrect and come back to haunt you. If you get an item incorrect, that particular sentence will automatically be added to your review queue in addition to your normal reviews.
Ghost Reviews utilize a separate SRS so that you can devote extra attention to a specific sentence/nuance while you continue to receive new sentences and progress in your normal reviews.
Ghost Review intervals are 4 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, and 48 hrs, meaning that you will see your Ghost sentence four times over the course of the next four days. Once the Ghost SRS 4 level has been successful, the Ghost is officially gone! Depending on the items SRS level, you will see it again at a previously scheduled interval just like if you never had the Ghost setting turned on in the first place.
When Ghost Reviews are set to ‘On’ in Settings, a Ghost Review will be created for a sentence if you miss it once in your reviews. Set Ghost Reviews to ‘Minimal’ to only add a sentence to Ghost Reviews if you miss the same sentence more than once.
You can remove all Ghost Reviews from your review queue by clicking on Profile > Settings > Reset, and selecting Ghost Reviews from the dropdown menu. A link to this page can be found here.
What are Review Queue Timings?
This community-requested feature allows you to select when you would prefer to see your reviews. If you are someone that likes having them sprinkled throughout the day, then the default setting of 'Hourly' will be what you want. If you prefer to have all your reviews available at the start of your day to knock them out quickly, then all you will need to do is adjust the setting to be 'Daily' and hit the green Update button.
What are Grammar Hints?
During your Bunpro reviews, you will first notice a large Hint button on the bottom left of your screen. This button will cycle certain information in a pre-determined order that will aid you in your reviews. The photo below will highlight two distinct areas we'll briefly cover now:
First, let's look at the red area. The entire red rectangle is what's referred to as a 'Translation', and in this current state it is in 'Show' mode. This means that the entire English translation is showing during your reviews. Notice the highlighted green words inside the red box? These by themselves are called 'Hints', and is the default setting Bunpro chooses for you when you make an account. Hints are essentially the key part of the sentence we're looking for as an answer. In order, the Hints state is shown first but if you hit the 'Hint' button once, it will move to the Translation state to help you out.
Moving onto the blue area now! This area was specifically designed for those who wish to read a definition of the Japanese grammar word in Japanese to get the answer, without using any English prompts. The Japanese sentence in this box is what's known as a 'Nuance', whereas the Japanese sentence + English translation of said sentence is called 'Nuance Translation'.
What is the Review Hint + Review Hint Order Setting?
Now that we've learned all of the above information on Review Hints, we can focus on the Bunpro setting that allows you to select which of the 4 stages you would like your reviews to default to. Quick note: All settings are updated in real-time, meaning that if you adjust something in one tab and have your Reviews open in another, you will see the change instantly. Helpful for testing! In addition, inside Reviews under the Cogwheel option, you can change the preferences here as well.
The first order of business will to determine whether or not you prefer seeing the Nuance or Translation first. Bunpro defaults to Translation first, so let's stick with this for now. Under the 'Order' tab this will be shown as 'Translation First'. Next, looking at the Default Level, this is where we can really fine tune things. The levels here build off of each other, so if you selected 'Nuance' in the 'Default Level' tab, you would be seeing the entire sentence's English translated plus the Japanese-only nuance sentence.
This same sentiment applies for if you wanted to have 'Nuance First' instead of the translation. You'll notice that the Default Level area's order gets turned around, but like previously stated, all the levels build off themselves in order. We recommend playing around with this a bit and adjusting settings a few times in real-time just to see for yourself which style you'd prefer.
