WaniKani Integration Explained

One of the features of Bunpro is our WaniKani integration. This syncs a users WaniKani progress to their Bunpro account.

There are two different ways you can use the WaniKani integration:

1. Furigana –Using Wanikani to show/hide furigana across Bunpro

2. Vocab Reviews – Syncing the vocabulary you've studied through Wanikani to your Vocab Reviews inside of Bunpro

How to Sync with WaniKani:

Using either integration first requires you a few steps to set it up:

1. Log in to WaniKani

2. Visit the Settings > API Tokens page

3. Click the Generate a new token button to create an API token

4. Give it a description – "Bunpro" seems fitting

5. Click the Generate token button (we don't need any Permissions as we won't be modifying any data)

6. Copy the generated token (the code bolded and in red)

7. Visit General Settings, scroll down to the WaniKani section and click the Connect button

8. This will bring up the Sync With WaniKani popout

9. Paste that key you copied earlier into the text field

10. Hit the Add button

It should load for a split second, and, BOOM!
Congratulations, you have now added your WaniKani API key to with Bunpro!

From this Sync With Wanikani popout, you can now fine tune how your WaniKani account interacts with Bunpro.

Furigana

Selecting this option will set the Furigana mode of your account to "WaniKani".
You do not need to be a Premium user to use this feature.
Kanji that is Guru or higher on WaniKani will behave as "known" in Bunpro (it will not show up above words as furigana).

NOTE that if a word contains multiple kanji (e.g. 日本), all characters (e.g both 「日」and「本」) have to be known before the furigana is hidden.

You do not need to do a Vocab Review sync (using either of the methods – Daily or Import Once Now) in order for just the furigana to stay synced between WaniKani and Bunpro.
At the start of every visit to Bunpro, we will automatically pull the new Guru'd Kanji from WaniKani.

Toggling this on will also change the Content Display > Furigana setting to "WaniKani".

Vocab Review Sync

The other integration you can take advantage of allows you to mirror your Vocab Reviews in WaniKani to your Vocab Reviews in Bunpro.
As the Reviews and all Quizzing features are Premium-only, this one is also Premium only.

To pull these Vocab Reviews, you must first import them.
But before we do that, we must decide how you want them to be imported.

There are 3 different modes of handling the syncing that you can choose from:

• Default

  • Marks items Guru and above in WaniKani as Seasoned (SRS 8) in Bunpro. Burned items get marked as Mastered. All imported items will be added to your Review queue.

• Practice

  • Marks all items Guru and above in WaniKani as Seasoned (SRS 8) in Bunpro (including Burned items). All imported items will be added to your Review queue.

• Mastered

  • Marks all items Guru and above in WaniKani as Mastered (SRS 12) in Bunpro. No items will be added to your Review queue.

For example, if you are far along in your WaniKani journey and have a few Burned Vocabulary items, but want to practice them again within Bunpro, you can select "Practice" mode.
However, if you don't want to practice a Vocab in both Bunpro AND WaniKani, you might want to select Mastered mode, so that all WaniKani Vocabulary never shows up in Bunpro.

Once you have decided on a mode, hit the Import Once Now button.

NOTE that if you have a lot of Reviews in WaniKani, it can take a while to import all of them into Bunpro. Please be patient. 🙇‍♂️

Also, if you want your Vocab Reviews to stay synced with WaniKani, you can also select the Daily Sync option too!

Now with that done, if you go back to your Dashboard, you should see some (or a lot of) gained XP in the profile section in the top right, and also all the Vocabulary from WaniKani should show up within the Progress section (under the Vocab tab).
