About に対して

(たい)する and (たい)して are two grammar patterns in Japanese that are regularly used to show when (B) is 'opposed to' or 'in contrast with' (A). (たい)する itself is a verb meaning 'to oppose'. Although this feeling of 'opposition' may be negative, in most circumstances, it just means 'toward' in the sense of targeting something.
(たい)する will be followed directly by a second noun, while (たい)して creates a pause in the sentence, before (B) will be explained in the second half of that sentence.
  • (きみ)(たい)する気持(きも)ちは一生(いっしょう)()らない
    My feelings toward you will never change.
  • (わたし)店員(てんいん)(たい)する態度(たいど)(わる)(ひと)苦手(にがて)です
    I don't like people who have a bad attitude towards store employees. (People who target their bad attitude at store employees)
  • ああいう(ふう)に、先輩(せんぱい)(たい)してタメ(ぐち)使(つか)()くない(おも)よ。
    I don't think it is best to talk to a senpai using casual speech in that manner. (Talking casually toward a senior)
  • (なん)でいつも(わたし)(たい)してそういう(ひど)いこと()
    Why do you always say mean things like that to me? (With me as the target)
Fun Fact
Compared to (かん)して (another structure used to show how things 'relate' to each other), (たい)して focuses on (A) and (B) equally, explaining how those things interact, compare, or contrast each other.
  • このプロジェクト(かん)して質問(しつもん)がある(かた)(わたし)直接(ちょくせつ)電話(でんわ)てください
    If you have any questions concerning this project, please give me a call directly. (Questions in relation to this project)
  • (わたし)はサッカーが()なの(たい)して(かれ)はバドミントンが()
    In contrast to me liking soccer, he likes badminton. (Opposed to me who likes soccer)
Caution
As (たい)して strongly contrasts (A) and (B), this grammar structure will often be used to express differences between two things. This is very similar to 'whereas' in English.
  • マサミは(むずか)しい(ほん)()んだの(たい)して、カスミは簡単(かんたん)(ほん)()んだ。
    Masami read a difficult book, whereas Kasumi read an easy book.
  • (かれ)仕事(しごと)(らく)なの(たい)して(ぼく)仕事(しごと)はものすごく大変(たいへん)
    His job is carefree, whereas my job is very difficult.

Examples

  • この部分(ぶぶん)(たい)して質問(しつもん)(おお)かった。ちょっと(むずか)しかったのかしら...。

    There were many questions regarding this part. I wonder if it was too difficult...

  • 日本(にほん)教育(きょういく)制度(せいど)(たい)してどう(おも)

    What are your thoughts in regards to the Japanese school system?

  • イギリス(じん)ビール()なの(たい)して、フランス(じん)(あか)ワイン()だ。

    English people like drinking beer in contrast to French people who like red wine.

  • (だれ)(たい)して親切(しんせつ)(ひと)になりたい。

    I want to be nice towards anyone and everyone.

  • 大人(おとな)(たい)してそんな失礼(しつれい)態度(たいど)()ってはいけません。

    You must not be so rude toward adults.

    Hi!
    I also agree with that some years after. Since it is still not split.
    Also it would be great to write a little note about the difference between に比べて and のに対して, since it’s 2 different grammar points for comparaison.

    I think I haven’t quite understood this grammar point (and related ones as a consequence…). Can someone explain why the answer here is に対して and not に対する? Thank you in advance! 🙇‍♂️
