About ているところだ

In the previous grammar point, we learned that たところ (or ていたところ) will mean 'just did (A)', or 'was just doing (A)'. ているところ works in a similar way, but expresses that someone is right in the middle of doing something. It is regularly translated as 'doing (A) right now', or 'in the process of (A)'.

Caution

Using ているところ will indicate that someone is 'busy with (A)', and would therefore not be used when changing actions suddenly. In these cases ているところだった would be used, before the (B) phrase would further explain what happened next.

    Hello! In these example sentences:

    ちょうど今晩ご飯を作っているところなので、早く帰って来て。
Just now, I am in the process of making dinner, so hurry home.

    その副詞の使い方がよく分からないので、今辞書で調べているところなんです。
I’m not sure how to use that adverb, so I’m looking it up in the dictionary right now.

What is the な after the ているところ verbs all about? Does ているところ nominalize?

I’m not super sure, but isn’t that just んだ/んです/のだ/のです when used after a noun? Note the structure box in that grammar point–when んです follows a verb, it requires a な. ところ is a noun, so when combining it with んです, it turns into ところなんです.

    ところ is a noun

Yup, checks out. Thanks a lot!
